Recently, a young woman in her 20’s asked me a really good question, “How do I keep my heart from getting hard 3+ years down the line from now? from disappointment and pain?”
This was such a good question that it caused me to pause and really ponder this question. Life inevitably has disappointment, pain, possible trauma, loss, and unexpected things that can tempt anyone to harden their heart.
How does a person position their heart in a way so that we don’t get calloused towards God and others?
The only answer I could think of is this, take life one day at a time. CHOOSE one day at a time to not harden your heart towards God and others and that’s how in 3+ years, we can ensure that our heart will still be teachable, pliable, and open.
I was put in charge of making up a game for the younger kids in our homeschool coop this week for our Valentine’s party. I had this idea to create this simple puzzle based on Proverbs 28:14, Blessed is the man who always fears the Lord, but he who hardens his heart falls into trouble.
Some days, does your heart feel all mixed up like this puzzle? Are you feeling distant from God? Having issues at work? Money problems pressuring you? Irritation with your roommates? Conflict in your marriage? Disagreements with your kids?
There is so much wisdom and freedom in God’s words, Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. (Matthew 6:34)
I am speaking this over myself today and I hope it encourages you too–take life one day at a time. Intentionally choose to face the challenges today gives you and work it out with God and those around you with HIS wisdom and strength. It takes great courage, but let’s position our hearts to do this daily.
How is your heart today? I encourage you to pause and reflect on this question with Him… May you feel His love in your life today and everyday.
